Unblocked, A New Look and Feel Comes Around

Posted by Justin on August 27, 2008
Life and Living

After finding that my domain was supposedly hosting malware and such (for no apparent reason), I decided to start fresh for the first time in over 3 years. Today, a new look, all new files, etc.

From here on out, you may find weird blocks of white space - these are the old ads that use to run. While I may continue to run ads, it really matters on how I feel at the time. It’s been hard to run ads over the last few years and I still don’t like to do it, but it helps pay the bills, albeit, barely. You will also find (not find?) files due to the old shtuff being cleaned out. This change mainly affects images from several years ago.

A change of content, and hopefully pace, will come about as well. I’m starting to devote more time to a home test server I have setup. This means I’ll be ranting or raving about Microsoft type products like SharePoint more and more. Yes, I will be installing Alfresco and all the other ones as well - I want to do a very serious comparison between the two as well as the others. Since this server is a workhorse (Dual Quad Core Xeons), I’ll have plenty of Virtual Machine space for testing - and I already have complaints about Microsoft’s Virtual Machine…

Anyway, hope you like the new look. I should be posting a few things here and there over the next few days. ~J

Google Nails Domains For Malware

Posted by Justin on August 17, 2008
Life and Living

Well, it was bound to happen. Aparently, on the 15th of June, Google had some type of Malware come across my domain during a crawl. I hadn’t even noticed until a user reported it to me today. Firefox 3 uses this information and pretty much makes using my site a pain in the ass. Every click, on every page, you are shown a warning message. To Google’s credit, they did attempt to notify several generic addresses, but those had been blocked YEARS ago due to spam issues.

The site report for webtekconcepts.com shows 1 “infection” resulting in 2 processes on the host computer. See the report here (until I figure this crap out). Aparently, if you leave off the “www”, I’ve caused 2 infections… (Note: This number has now changed)

So, for the record, it wasn’t I. The only Ads I serve re Google Ads and I maintain a healthy password and access control list on my domain. The only possibility that I can think of is that an Ad came through that had something in it - from Google. I’ve also looked at my logs, my bash history, my files, the dates of what has been edited, etc and see absolutely nothing out of place. So what the heck?

I did a little research before pressing the Magic Button on Google’s site to have them re-crawl my site. Turns out, theres a nice little page that shows everything they look for. If you’re some Joe Blow reading through the list, it sounds all neat and nice. If you’re a web master or someone that deals with a lot of web based content, it might shock you. Know someone that has a blog that you don’t like - too easy to get them listed. Simply link to a malware site in a comment and *poof* - they’re listed. Nice eh?

Oh, and the “Magic Button” to get Google to recrawl the site again states: “I certify that I have removed badware or badware links from my site, according to StopBadware.org’s Security Tips For Websites.” So, without knowing where, who or what it is that I’m linking to - I’m screwed because I allow comments on the website. The security report as just as pointless. It found “something” 1 time in 90 days that got me listed. What the bloody hell Google?

It’s really interesting too, because I recently ran a story about a Bait and Switch website. I figured that this site might be the problem, so I went to it inside Firefox 3 - not a damn thing happened.

At the moment, I’m on TDY (Temporary Duty) in Sicily, so I can’t do much. When I get back (Wed), I’ll be updating WordPress, Re-themeing and breaking a heck of a lot of old stories because I’m doing a serious amount of housecleaning on the domain. …And no - Sicily is not fun, it’s HOT, I’d rather be in Germany, thank you!

Oh - I should be releasing some stories about a new server, SharePoint and Alfresco here pretty soon. If only I could get Windows 2008 and Virtual Machine to play nice ;-)

A New Authentication Method For Web Apps

Posted by Justin on June 12, 2008
Tools of the Trade

I’m being my normal self and am working on a personal project to “be my own boss”. Translation: I’m coding a web application for one of my 20 or so domain names.

In the past when working on a web application, I would either write an authentication scheme or borrow from an Open Source project like PHP User Class, but this time, I think I”m going to try something I’ve never seen before - not using any coded authentication - on my end.

Over the years, I’ve managed to pick up more username and password combos on different websites than I care to even think of remembering. Every time I manage to hit one of these websites, I must remember the right username and password, if Firefox isn’t setup to remember it for me. In today’s age, however, there seems to be something that prevents me from designing this archaic system over again. Why should I write an Authentication Scheme when Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, MySpace and others have done it for me?

So, if you made it through all that and are still confused, I’m thinking about a website that could possibly be popular (isn’tthat every website?) with no “Register”, no “Login Username/Password” and all that junk. The only form of logging in is a choice of which service to log in with, be it Google, Yahoo, Microsoft Live, Facebook and possibly more.

At the moment, Alexa, as flawed as they are, lists Yahoo and Google as the two most popular websites on the web. With those two websites, I can probably cover 90% or more of my users, although I may through Microsoft’s Live authentication scheme in as well to include more people. I know Zoho and others use both Yahoo & Google together, mixed with their own authentication scheme. I’m just a little curious how this would go over.

PhotoDynasty.com Tells Spouse of Deployed Soldier “War is an Excuse” After Bait and Switch

Posted by Justin on May 05, 2008
Rants

A very good friend sent this to me today, it’s a shame a company would do this to anyone. What they told her after they tried to intimidate her was even worse. Any company that says this type of stuff about the military needs to understand what the military is. [Note: "Ed" and "Nancy's" names have been changed and none of the links...link because I don't want to improve on their search engine rankings.]

Here is my husband’s experience with this scam company.

The bottom line is that he bought the camera and some accessories as a gift for me for Mother’s Day and to use on R & R this summer on our vacation with the kids. It was originally $839 and he was sent the non-itemized receipt via email with a request that he contact them to confirm the delivery address. When he called back, they used a classic bait and switch technique.

Ed told them he no longer wanted the accessories, just the camera, and “Tom” their sales rep told him that the camera he bought did not come with a battery or charger (which normally comes in the manufactures box) so he had to purchase the accessories or it would not work — forcing him to not cancel the accessories order.

Ed then advised that he wanted to cancel the whole order, but was told it was their company policy to charge $250.00 for cancellations (no where to be found on their website by the way). He was losing his Vonage connection and was upset about the “fee” so he asked me to call them back.

When I contacted them, I asked for their mailing address. Chet told me “I am not authorized to give that out.” I knew right then something was wrong. I told Chet that I had a complaint and they gave me to “Chris”.

I advised Chris that I wanted to cancel the entire order, and wanted a full refund since the order had not been shipped. Chris then proceed to first tell me that he didn’t know how to do that. I advised “Chris” that he would be making the refund, or I would begin the process ofRecentemente anche il Texas Hold ‘Em e’ diventato il gioco di poker / casino piu popolare ovunque sia stato giocato. filing a complaint against their company.

Chris then went off on me. He yelled, swore, and tried to intimidate me. When that didn’t work, he said he didn’t want to deal with me, only my husband. I told Chris that my husband was a little busy right now in Iraq and that he asked me to call on his behalf.

Chris then stated the following “I am so SICK of people using the war as an excuse. Those guys signed up as volunteers, and now you want to use that as an excuse? I don’t want to do business with anyone in the military again”.

He said that he would give me the refund, but would not put it in writing, stating “Don’t you trust me?”. I knew he was a crook from the moment he opened his mouth, so of course I did not believe him.

I started doing some extensive research on this company. Basically, there is no information out there about Photo Dynasty (www.photodynasty.com) However, when you call them you get a recorded message calling themselves “Enterprise Photo”. So I started checking on them instead. Wow, did I find a lot of info and under multiple names/websites/phone numbers. It appears as though they are all related companies, and that when one starts to lose business from bad publicity , they just start a different website.

Go to www.newyork.bbb.org
Click on “Check out a business or charity”
Type in Enterprise Photo
Click on Best Price Cameras (another one of their company names)

See the listing you get and the complaints. Basically, it’s what I told you that they just change names when it gets to be too much of a problem. The only reason I knew Enterprise/Photo Dynasty were the same was from their recorded message.

They are also listed here:
http://donwiss.com/pictures/brooklynstores/
http://sheddingsomelight.com/buy-cameras/list/dealers-mraccfam.html (under Mr Accessory)
http://forums.photographyreview.com/showthread.php?t=10918&page=3
http://thoughts-of-dave.blogspot.com/2008/04/messin-with-broadway-photo-aka-best.html

So at this point this is what has happened:

They immediately charged the credit card (even though their policy says they won’t charge until item is shipped) for $1182 dollars. We never could figure out what all of the extra charges were for and they never really explained it.

1. My husband called them back and told them to go ahead and ship it - we know it will never arrive–however this way we can prove to Mastercard we never received any items
2. Also, the amount charged on our card does not add up to the amount we agreed to pay (they charged us $1182).
3. We have already started the dispute process with Mastercard
4. After reading so many complaints, my husband had M/C reissue him a new credit card number for fear of identity theft (which I found has happened to people in their blogs)
5. I have filed a complaint with the city of NY’s consumer affairs, who licenses these businesses
6. I am filing a complaint with the NY state Attorney General’s office
7 I am filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau of New York so they can know about the new name “Photo Dynasty”
8. I called yesterday, just to see if they would lie and tell me the item had been shipped however I was told it was not even a valid order number. They transferred me to someone else, but after a total of 50 minutes on hold (thankfully using Skype) while I was cleaning my office, I hung up.

Thankfully, we have some level of protection because we used a credit card. Had we used a debit card, the money would have went straight out of our bank account and would be gone forever.

A big part of this problem is that people may be inclined to use these scam companies because on several websites that review electronics online, they have this company/ these companies listed as an authorized seller. That because these con artists pay the website to be listed there (when you click on their link, they give the website a fee). Hence, people are going to be inclined to trust this company.

Again, I just don’t want someone else to get taken by these crooks.
Nancy

A “Tell All” About Why I Dog Alfresco

Posted by Justin on February 12, 2008
Alfresco, Open Source Projects, SharePoint

I’ve written about Alfresco several times, I’ve even received comments back about my writing style with respect to Alfresco. Well, tonight is no exception. I received a comment that made me think a little and my response turned into a full-blown post.

You really have it in for Alfresco don’t you? To be perfectly neutral on the subject, (I honestly have no affiliations with Alfresco), you do come across as favouring MS.

I have a very weird attitude towards Alfresco, and it’s due to two different views that I’ve come to love and hate. Specifically, they are the Pro OSS side and the Enterprise Techie Side.

Alfresco is a great accomplishment on the OSS side of things. The community parti poker netpoker regeln holdfive card draw pokerparty poker bonus, party poker 50 bonus, bonus bei party pokerpoker um geld spielensichere online spielepoker anleitung texas holdempoker no deposit bonusparty poker downloadmultiplayer championship poker texas holdempoker software gratisomaha poker rulesonline spielenpoker texaspoker kostenlosplay omaha pokerpoker stars bonus code7 card stud downloadfull tilt poker bonustexas holdem poker handsregeln zu pokerplay omaha poker onlinetexas holdem ohne anmeldungonline poker für macgratis poker gamespoker spiel downloadentexas holdem wahrscheinlichkeitpoker java gamewww poker spielenpoker taxas holdempoker signup bonuspokerstars bonusparty poker net cheatsholdem poker pc gamewo kann man poker spielenonline poker detexas holdem poker downloadmultiplayer championship poker holdemtexas holdem no limit regelnparty poker 75draw poker onlinevincere poker onlinesoftware cartepoker texano on linestip poker gratisil poker onlinestrategie texas holdemfull tilt pokerpoker roompoker texas holdem, tornei poker texas holdem, regolamento poker texas holdem is providing a great product and they’ve really put a lot of effort into it.

The other side of the fence is the IT guy that has to make a decision to buy a “more expensive product” or Alfresco. After going through their sales process (for a very real, possible sale) a year ago, they had a heck of a lot of growing up to do. They also do several other things that annoy me as well - but I tend to write about most of those.

Unfortunately, due to time constraints, I haven’t had a chance to perform another sales call to them, so they may have fixed many of my initial points (there are more than the points I freaked out on before). I was actually about to perform another sales call, but managed to land a job last Wed and ended up starting that same Friday - talk about fast.

Anyway, from what I’ve seen, Alfresco could be great, but it needs to do a few things better to be something thats going to stay around for awhile. At this point in time, I honestly believe that the company itself is growing it’s employee and cost base way too fast and I’m predicting some nasty stuff is going to happen in the next few years - and yes, I know they just received a $9M round of funding…

The software alone will not “make” this company. In all honesty, I would love to see Alfresco become a profitable company.

I will offer this piece of advice to anyone that will take it, completely free of fees, royalties and lawsuits: The first company that designs a kick-ass SharePoint alternative using C#.Net mixed with MSSQL will make a boat load of money, OSS or not.

As for being Pro-MS (aka: SharePoint), at the moment, I am and so is most of the business world. Ask anyone that has purchased SharePoint if they even looked at Alfresco for longer than a quick peek at their site, I’m willing to bet they didn’t look long at all. As much as I hate it, the business world is completely Pro-MS and some will even laugh you right out of the room for suggesting OSS alternatives. Oddly, some of these same businesses use FireFox internally. Things that make you go Hmm.
