I’m a little late on reporting this, but if you’ve downloaded a WordPress theme or have created one from scratch from someone else’s code, you need to view the following “feature“. This issue also effect nearly every other theme you can download to include Mambo, Joomla, PHPNuke and more…
If you’re curious how this works, theme makers would sometimes introduce SEO topics for specific websites they either control or are paid to boost rankings with. So, you download a theme, install it and instantly, you link to someone else’s website, increasing their SEO when the Robots come in and see links from a valid site to an advertising site.
Luckily, the WordPress developers have removed all sponsored themes, so that site is safe, but you still need to watch what you download. Several other websites have removed their sponsored themes as well due to community feedback as well. Just remember to read the fine print on anything you download and install.
